Darkris: The Student

Yesterday (Wednesday) was my first day of university since 1999. It's been a long time between drinks. I arrived early, but was late to class as I was ushered into the 'auditorium' for a talk by a woman from a paper company that runs a competition for design students every year, by the admissions officer. It went something like this:

"Hi, you must be Nick. Do you have 10 minutes to spare?"

At this point I looked at my watch, and discerned that I only had EXACTLY 10 minutes before my very first class.

"Oh, I don't know, I have class at 1:30.."

"Oh, that's fine, I wouldn't want you to miss out on a chance to win $3,000 on your first day."

At this point I picture my eyes lighting up like dollarsigns and I follow her like an obedient zombie. I then sat through a 20 minute, mind-numbing talk about how I can compete against students all across the nation that are involved in design courses. I didn't have the balls to blow off the talk and walk out, so I sat there, taking in the sights of the assemble, as I tried to ascertain what kind of age range I was faced with.

Ok, the thought of winning $3,000 for designing something was fairly inviting, however, trying to juggle this competition (which was so obviously a marketing campaign by the paper company), my schooling and my fulltime job, not to mention my private life, seemed a little difficult. Perhaps next year if I have time, because I will still technically be a 1st year student ;)

So I finally get to my class (Computer Graphic Skills 1) and I get stuck with the shitty eMac where it is conveniently located next to the printer and an even shittier old lime-green iMac. Not only is it hard to see the projector screen, but it is hard to see the whiteboard for notes, and I'm by myself. Talk about incentives for being to class on time. I'm gonna get there 10 minutes early next week! Lol. I hope they don't have allocated seats :-/ I'll just throw my 'mature-age student' weight around. Lol.

The class was pretty good, we were working in Illustrator (version 10, ugh) and we were just going through all the basic tools and skills. I didn't think I'd learn anything, however, much to my surprise, I was able to memorise something from class that I can never seem to remember. When you apply text to a path, be it an ellipse or a rectangle and you want to change the location of the text, all you do is select the 'static I tool' you know, like the cursor you see in Word when you are typing something up. This will appear on the path, and when you have the selection tool selected, you will see this and be able to drag it (and the text) to where you want it. Simple, huh?

Anyway, the highlight of this first class was when a second year student came in and had to work on the iMac to fiddle with some work. After much fussing (he was a bit of an attention seeker :P ) he brings something up on the screen and gets my attention with "Psst! Check this out, whaddya think?"

After successfully breaking my concentration, I felt it only fair that I actually look at what he was showing me. On the screen was some tag text that said something like "Battle of the Year" it looked quite impressive, as I can't really do that kind of thing. So I asked him what I think must be my stock standard question: "Did you do that by hand?"

He replied with a snort, a guffaw and then said: "Nah man! All Illustrator!"

He then went on to say, and this is the funny part: "It's ok, when you learn how to use the Pen tool, you'll be able to do stuff like this too."

LOL

At this point I smiled inwardly and went back to my work. What a moron. That comment was definitely the highlight of my day to that point. This same guy thought I was only 20, which was nice of him.

Anyway, the second class was a guest speaker, the Editor of DG (formerly Design Graphics) Magazine, Colin Wood. This went for 1.5 hours, and it was good to listen to him, but it should have only gone for an hour. The last half hour or so was question time, and the class asked questions that they had prepared the week before and some spontaneous questions. Some of the questions were silly, like "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" This guy would be between the ages of 50 and 65, so a question like this doesn't really receive an interesting question. It would have been ok to ask this kind of question later, one on one, but I just thought a question like "How is DG magazine seen worldwide, and what kind of impact do you think the magazine has on the design industry as a whole?" would have been a better one. Maybe it's just me.

After school it was a mad-dash to get to basketball on time. I had to get from Footscray to Coburg in 40 mins, in peak-hour traffic and on the night of the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. Good luck.

I made it there in 20 minutes! That has to be a record! Anyway, we only had 5 because Bren and Chief couldn't make it, that means we're in for a painful game as they are our two top scorers. Fuck.

We managed to play a very decent game, most of the luck was going our way and Anthony just wasn't missing his shots. Handy. Then it happened, two minutes into the second half, the first casualty of Gino's reffing, Lukey was fouled off. We managed to see-saw the lead a couple of times and hang in there. With 5 minutes to go, the second, and biggest blow of the game came when our only big man, Stuey DeLange was fouled off. Oh crap.

We ran the game with 3 guys, Tayls, Gruj and Viney and we managed to run away with a 2 point victory! Unheard of! The guys played spectacularly well in very, very tough conditions. This would have to go down as one of the best games we have won, mentally and physically, in the last year. This team, Zukes, beat the Anti-Raptors by 4 points (55-51, holy fuck!)

Hopefully the RMIT Giants lost last night, as this will put us on equal points going into next weeks game when we play each other. Then we just have to buckle up for the last 15 games of the season (yipe!) and try to knock Flemington Magic out of second so that we can beat the Anti-Raptors in the final and run away with our much deserved premiership.

After all that, I got home, had a little grub and passed out on the couch. Man, going back to school is going to be cool! :D

Higher Education and Miscellanea

Well, it's not really miscellanea, but it got called that because I was looking for a cool word for the title.

We got beat on wednesday night. 15 points. They killed us with their hit-rate. Seriously, I think their conversion rate was something like 90% and ours was somewhere around my underpants. That leaves the tally at 0-2 with two games left against them, so we have a chance to balance it out. We could even beat them overall if we beat them in the final. We should be grand final contenders too, because we have really meshed as a team now, and we're playing some good ball :)

So yesterday I was feeling a little confined in my current job. I woke up feeling a little depressed at the fact that I have no where to go. This got me thinking that I really need to start thinking about the future and do some things that I have been meaning to do for years. I hit the higher education sites (namely VTAC) and searched for courses with a major in Design. I got several hits, and they were all sorted alphabetically.

At around the top of the list was the Australian Academy of Design's Diploma of Design and Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design) courses. Thinking I wouldn't have a snowballs chance in hell, but feeling that I had nothing to lose anyway, I shot an email off to the Director of Admissions.

"The Enrolment Officer,

Hi, my name is Nick Bugeja and I am currently working as a Packaging Designer for a company called KSH Cartons where I have been working now for 4.5 years. I am a self-taught artist/designer and seek desperately to improve my skills that would bring me up to scratch with industry standards. My role in the company will soon be changing to a more senior position, and I am afraid that I lack the industry know-how required to undertake my role efficiently.

I know it is extremely late, but I was wondering if was possible to start the part-time Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design) at all. Is there a mid-year intake if a late start is not possible?

Any information you would be able to forward me regarding this course would be greatly appreciated.

If you need any additional information from me, I would be more than happy to supply it.

Many thanks in advance,

Nick Bugeja"

I honestly expected to get a negative reply, if any reply at all.

Three hours later, I got a response telling me to call ASAP to organise a time for an interview. I was struck dumb. It took me about 30 mins to garner the courage to call for that interview time. I called and I made a 9am meeting for this morning with the Director of the Academy.

Last night I stayed up until 2am readying my folio. I haven't made a folio of work since High School, which was 8 years ago! But I'm pretty proud of how it turned out :)

So after my interview I was offered the only part-time position available (excellent) and after I worked out my units, was told that I would be starting my higher ed journey next wednesday! I am SO excited!

There is only 2 little hurdles at this point in time:

1) I haven't been able to tell anyone at work that I got in yet, because they have been in meetings since I got here.

2) The course fee. It's a full-fee paying course, and it is quite alot of money. I am hoping that I can convince work that it is for their benefit so that they will at least pay half and take half out of my salary. I'm kinda hoping they will pay the entire fee, but somehow I doubt it.

Oh, speaking of hurdles, I got the all clear from my surgeon today to start my rehab. No sooner had I walked out of his office was I on the phone to my old physio making an appointment. They are cheaper and they do more than my current physio. I hope to be in a sport playing position in 7 weeks. I reckon it's more than good chance of it happening. :)

Bring it..

Tonight is the night. Another clash of the titans as the Raptors come up against their arch-nemesis in the competition (only very narrowly), Shaft. Last time the anti-Raptors, as they have been dubbed, beat us. Admittedly they caught us off guard, being one of the first games back for the year, and without a meshing team. But this time we are ready. We're coming off 3 wins in a row with a cool-headed team that is clicking, and is only just starting to find it's best form. I have no doubt that the game will be close, very close, but I believe it is a competition from which we will reign supreme.

I played D&D for the first time last night since May or June of 2004. Man it was good. It took a while to get back into the swing of things, and despite preparing myself for weeks, some of the mechanics took a bit of getting used to again. But, my character Thorim performed well, even if he only managed to moosh one thing all night (due mostly to the frag-stealingness of my party :P).

What's also good is, with the long weekend coming up, we get to play again on Sunday night! BOOYAH! :D

Well I had better skidoodle and do some work :P I might post a bit later on..

That's the pictures I promised you yesterday, just a tad late, sorry about that.

I'm just so tired today; I guess venturing into the city to see Maddy when she finished work was a bad idea considering my current Constitution penalty. I'm still suffering the effects of fatigue. I might disappear now, get some caffeine and attempt to finish some Burning Out pencils :)

Chat to you later peeps..

Boredom..

Being stuck at home for several days may seem like fun at first, but it soon grows old. Since wednesday, when I got out of hospital, I have been housebound, suffering stifling heat and anxious boredom. I have a lot of things that I can do to pass the time despite not being able to move very far or fast. The problem is being motivated to do any of it.

Before I get too far into this post, I should tell everyone that yes, I am fine, the surgery went very well and I should be back to playing sport within about 8 weeks. They didn't find anything wrong with my right knee, which lead the surgeon to believe that the discomfort I was feeling was a patella tracking problem which can be fixed by working the Vastus Medialis part of the quadriceps. The left knee had a shite-load of scar tissue in it (which I suspect was left in there from the reconstruction I had back in 2002) that they cleaned out. I also have to work the VM part of my quads on that leg to support the patella.

I see all of this as positive news, and it has brought me out of my doldrums. Because it explained why I was experiencing so much discomfort in both knees, and now I have a solution that could very well prevent injuring them ever again. Yay.

So apart from working a bit from home, I've cleaned up my home computer which was riddled with virii and cleaned my workbench. I've begun colouring another page of Burning Out and have been working on more story and character sketches. It's all happening. I just finished finalising a look for a character called Ken Stanley. I'm not going to post an image of him just yet, but I will soon I think.

Later today I'll post images of my new hat, Maddy's new car and maybe a desktop image I whipped up. Stay tuned.
